INGREDIENTS
  • 1-14 oz. package extra-firm tofu
  • ½ c. barbecue sauce
  • cooking spray or oil mister

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. To prepare tofu, press it for 30 minutes to extract liquid. Cut the pressed tofu into ½-inch thick slices, then quarter each slice.
  2. In an 8x8 inch square baking dish, mix together your desired amount of barbecue sauce--just enough to coat the tofu.
  3.  Let it marinate for 1 hour (or more), flipping occasionally so each side gets evenly coated.
  4. Before starting, preheat your oven to 400 degrees and coat a baking sheet with oil or cooking spray.
  5. Bake the tofu on a baking sheet for 20 minutes. Be sure not to get rid of the barbecue sauce!
  6. After 20 minutes have passed, turn the tofu over and brush it with more barbecue sauce.
  7. Bake the tofu for an extra 20 minutes or until it is browned around the edges.
  8. Coat the tofu with the remaining barbeque sauce and serve.

Types of Tofu
You can also use different kinds of Tofu with this recipe! Tofu, also known as bean curd, is a versatile and popular ingredient in many vegetarian and vegan dishes. Here are some common types of tofu:

  • Super Firm tofu: This type of tofu is the most commonly used. It has a dense texture and can be sliced, cubed, or crumbled. Firm tofu is great for stir-fries, grilling, and baking.
  • Extra firm tofu: This variety of tofu is denser than firm tofu and holds its shape well. It can be sliced into steaks or cut into cubes, making it ideal for grilling or frying.
  • Silken tofu: Also known as soft tofu, silken tofu has a smooth and creamy texture. It works best in soups, smoothies, dips, and desserts.
  • Sprouted tofu: This type of tofu is made from sprouted soybeans, which gives it a nuttier flavor. It's high in protein and is great for use in salads, sandwiches, and stir-fries.
  • Tofu skins: Also known as yuba, tofu skins are made by boiling soy milk until a skin forms on the surface. They have a chewy texture and are often used in Chinese cuisine.
  • Flavored tofu: Some brands offer pre-seasoned or flavored tofu, such as smoked tofu, teriyaki tofu, or garlic and herb tofu. These can be a convenient way to add flavor to your dishes.

By experimenting with different types of tofu, you can discover new textures and flavors that add variety and nutrition to your meals.
How to know If Tofu is already baked?
When baking tofu, there are a few indicators that you can look for to determine if it is fully cooked:

  • Texture: Baked tofu should be firm and slightly crispy on the outside, while still tender on the inside. If it feels squishy or soft, it may not be baked enough.
  • Color: Tofu that is fully baked will have a golden brown color on the outside.
  • Time: Depending on the recipe and oven temperature, baking tofu can take anywhere from 20-40 minutes. Follow the recipe instructions and check the tofu periodically to ensure that it is not overcooked or undercooked.
  • Internal temperature: While not always necessary, you can use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the tofu. It should reach a temperature of at least 160°F (71°C) to ensure that it is safe to eat.

If you follow these tips, you can be confident that your baked tofu is fully cooked and ready to enjoy!
