Methods for grilled peppers
There are two ways to cook bell peppers on a grill. You can use a special basket or aluminum foil, or you can put them directly on the grates. See below for more details:
- Grill basket / foil method: Ideal for sliced vegetables and red onion, as it prevents the veggies from falling into the grill. Slightly time-consuming but provides a sweet, slow-cooked taste.
- On the grates: This method is only for bell peppers and requires them to be cut into quarters and placed on the grates. This method is quicker.
How to grill bell peppers in a grill basket!
This technique is ideal for grilled peppers that are sliced, or if you plan to utilize red onion. Red onion's sweetness pairs perfectly with the peppers, so it is highly recommended, although it can be excluded. Foil can be substituted if you don't have a grill basket. Here are some pointers for grilling peppers using this approach.
- Preheat the grill basket on the grill.
- Cut the peppers and onion into strips that are approximately 1.5 inches thick.
- Coat the vegetables with olive oil and salt.
- Grill the vegetables for about 10 to 15 minutes, making sure to turn them several times for even cooking.
Using aluminum foil as an alternative to a grill basket
You can create a DIY grill basket out of aluminum foil if you don't possess one. Doing this will prevent smaller vegetables from dropping through the grates. Follow these steps to make one:
- Take a large piece of aluminum foil and fold it in half.
- Use a fork to make several holes in the foil.
- Create a 1-inch fold around the edge of the foil to form a tray. This is optional, but it helps keep the veggies in the tray.
- Use the tray as you would a grill basket.
Grill peppers directly on the grates
Follow this particular method if you plan to make grilled bell peppers without onion. It involves the usage of larger pieces to prevent them from falling into the grill. Here are some pointers to keep in mind when using this approach:
- Begin by cutting the bell peppers into quarters and combining them with olive oil and salt.
- Place the pepper quarters directly onto the grates and space them apart as much as possible for faster cooking.
- Grill for roughly 6 to 10 minutes or until they are tender.
INGREDIENTS
- 3 multi-colored bell peppers
- 1 medium red onion OR 1 additional bell pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
INSTRUCTIONS
- Set your grill to medium-high heat (between 375 and 450 degrees) before you start cooking. If you're using a grilling basket, place it on the grill while it preheats.
- To make a tray, fold a big piece of foil in half. Use a fork to poke some holes in the middle. Then, make a 1-inch edge around the outside.
- If you are using the grill basket or foil method, you can also include onion in the recipe. Begin by cutting 3 peppers into 1.5 inches wide strips. Proceed by slicing the onions into wide strips and separate the layers using your fingers.
- Combine them in a bowl and mix them together with olive oil and kosher salt. Then, grill the mixture on the grill basket or foil tray for about 15 to 20 minutes, flipping the veggies multiple times to ensure even cooking. Check to see if the vegetables are tender before taking them off the grill.
- The bell peppers will be cut into quarters and placed in a bowl. After adding olive oil and kosher salt, mix everything together. Then, place them directly on the grill grates as far apart from each other as possible so they can cook evenly. Grill until tender for about 6-8 minutes then turn once during that time frame.
